The Eyes Have It is currently on semi-permanent hiatus. I'd like to thank everyone who supported TEHI over the years by linking to it, making post suggestions and offering comments. Please visit my current project Breaking Murphy's Law: There are a lot of things that can go wrong when you're a presenter (or when you are supporting someone else's presentation). This site is going to try to help you break Murphy's Law so Murphy's Law can't break you.

    Hiatus

Due to a number of impending deadlines at work, The Eyes Have It is going to be on a limited publishing schedule for the next several weeks. I’ll try to post whenever possible, but it will most likely only be on the weekends if at all. Feel free to send me your email address and I’ll let you know when we’re back at full steam. Thanks, as always, for your continued support.

The Big Picture Book of Viruses

The Big Picture Book of Viruses is intended to serve as both a catalog of virus pictures on the Internet and as an educational resource to those seeking more information about viruses. To this end, it is intimately linked to All the Virology on the WWW, and our collection of Virology Courses and Tutorials.

On this page, several types of information about viruses can be found. First and foremost, we show you what they look like, either by electron microscopy or by computerassisted imaging. The viral images are listed by their taxonomic groups. Images listed have been gathered from several well known sources on the web. Each image is presented in a miniature format on this page, with the original fullsized image being available by simply clicking on the image of interest. Also listed on the page are links to detailed information (Tutorials and On-Line Courses) about the viruses, and links to other WWW sites (All the Virology on the WWW) with additional information.

    Visual Pill Identifier

    From Drugs.com:

“Worried about those capsules you found in your teenager’s room? Not sure about some of those leftover pills still in the bathroom cabinet? There’s a good chance that our Wizard can help you match size, shape, colour… then lead you to the detailed description in our drugs database.”

Conceptually akin to a dictionary based on images rather than the alphabet. Any other examples of this idea out there?

    When not to be visual…

Text, Tables and Graphics by Juan C. Dürsteler outlines some thoughts on when and why a graphic might not be the best way to express information.

“A graphic is not always the most illustrative element . Written sentences, tables and graphics occupy their own place in the discourse of building clarity and insight.”

“Then, why this long article if the contents can be summarised in a brief table or an elementary diagram?. Because context, a key element in order to convert information into knowledge, and nuance are difficult to transmit by means of tables and graphics, even when we are talking about quantitative information.”
